Legimus for students
Are you a student in higher education who has difficulties reading text because of a functional impairment? If so you can get access to adapted course literature in Legimus. It has books, including coursebooks, in the form of talking books, Braille books and e-textbooks. E-textbooks should not be confused with e-books. E-textbooks are mostly used by partially sighted people.
To get access to the course literature in Legimus you need to:
-
Have a functional impairment that makes it difficult to read printed and digital text
-
Be admitted to and registered on a course or programme at a university or university college
About functional impairments
-
Having a functional impairment is not in itself enough to entitle you to have a Legimus account. There has to be a connection between your functional impairment and your difficulty in reading text.
-
For example, a functional impairment that can be corrected with glasses or medication, so that you can read text to the same extent as other students, does not entitle you to Legimus.
-
Difficulty concentrating is not in itself a functional impairment. However, a functional impairment can lead to difficulties concentrating and memory problems. Your difficulties concentrating must affect your reading to such a degree that you are unable to read text to the same extent as other students.
-
Having difficulties reading larger amounts of text because you are not used to doing so does not entitle you to Legimus.
-
If a functional impairment makes it difficult for you to read in your first language, you may borrow talking books in Swedish and other languages. Having Swedish as a second language does not entitle you to have a Legimus account.
How to apply
Apply via the library at your higher education institution. The library can help you regardless of whether you are doing distance or on-campus studies.
If you had an account earlier that has expired, you need to apply again.
If you already have an active account via a public or school library, you can move your account to your higher education institution on Legimus’ Mina sidor (My Pages).
-
Contact the people in charge of talking books at your institution library. In many cases you will have to book an appointment for a meeting. At the meeting you will be asked questions about your reading difficulties and how you read. You are responsible for giving correct answers. The application may be quicker if you have a certificate to prove that you have a functional impairment, but it is not a requirement.
-
While you wait – a trial account. Once you have applied you are given a limited trial account for you to try out Legimus and learn how it works.
-
Account decision. MTM makes the decision to grant you an account or not. You will receive the decision by email. Sometimes MTM may need more information, in which case you have to add that to your application. If your application is rejected, the email will have information about how to appeal the decision.
Approving the Terms of Use
Before you can begin using Legimus you have to approve the Terms of Use. These include the rule that you must not share books or your account with anyone else.
If you break the rules your account may be suspended. It may also lead to legal consequences. The books available in Legimus have been turned into talking books, Braille and e-text thanks to a limitation on copyright. It is therefore illegal not to follow the rules for Legimus.
Ordering course literature
-
Once you have an account you can read all books in Legimus, including course literature.
-
All books are not available in Legimus. You can order course literature that is not available in Legimus via the library. For MTM to turn book into a Legimus book it has to be part of a required reading list, and you must be expected to read the whole book or most of it. Most books are recorded using synthetic speech and text and are ready within 8–12 weeks.
-
If the book is available as an e-book in an accessible format that you can get via the library, you should borrow it from the library.
-
If the accessible e-book is not accessible enough for you to be able to read it, contact the library at your higher education institution.
The library will help you
You can always get help from the library at your higher education institution, even if you are not granted access to Legimus. Contact the library to find out more about what the options are – such as software, lectures and supervision.
